Provence's Alpine Regions: B&Bs and Vacation Rentals
Alpes de Haute Provence: The transition from the typical dry Garrigue covered landscape of the Provence to an Alpine setting takes place here. The area most visited by tourists is the Verdon Gorge (shared with the Var) and nearby Moustiers Sainte Marie, the famous pottery village. But there is much more to discover, like the spa towns of Digne les Bains, Greoux les Bains and the Plateau de Valensole (lavender). Further east is the alpine region of the Ubaye Valley with Barcelonette and the famous Mercantour National Park.
Hautes Alpes: The Durance's flow has been harnessed by a dam, which forms the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, Europe's largest artificial lake. Further north is magnificent alpine scenery with many peaks over 3000m. The Ecrins National Parks with its glaciers, the Queyras Regional Park, historic towns like Embrun, Briançon and many authentic alpine villages. This is prime outdoor country in winter and summer. Very popular with the French, still to be discovered by many foreign visitors.
