Alpes de Haute Provence: Vacation Rentals, B&Bs and Hotels
The transition from the typical dry Garrigue covered landscape of the Provence to an Alpine setting takes place in the Département Alpes de Haute Provence, the Alpes of the Upper Provence. The area most visited by tourists is the Verdon Gorge, which is shared with the Var in the south.
But there is much more to discover, like the spa town of Digne les Bains and the Ubaye Valley with Barcelonette and the Mercantour National Park, which is shared with the Départément Alpes Maritimes. The Ubaye Valley is flanked by the peaks of the Southern Alpes which reach 2.500 - 3.000m, a magnificent sight.
The Durance valley is the major north-south thoroughfare of the Alpes de Haute Provence, an important fruit growing region from Sisteron down to Manosque and of little interest to visitors. Northeast of the old fortress town of Sisteron, the Durance's flow has been harnessed by a dam, which forms the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, Europe's largest artifical lake.
