The area north and northheast of Avignon, the Haut Vaucluse, has become a very "in" place. You find famous Southern Côtes du Rhône wine villages (Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise, Cairanne, Rasteau), endless green vineyards, forests and the nature reserves of Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail (both great for day hikes). Visit historic Vaison la Romaine and the many small villages, like Crestet, Villedieu, Cairanne, Rasteau and the most famous of all, Séguret. Lots of quiet country roads for biking, the great weekly markets and a vibrant restaurant scene.
To the north, separated by a 3km corridor, is the Enclave des Papes (Popes' Enclave), a part of the Haut Vaucluse, a historic oddity with the town of Valréas and three lovely villages.
