The Drôme Provençale is the region north of the Provence proper. The area between the Rhône and the Alpes is Southern Côtes du Rhône wine country. Further east are the rugged mountains of the Pre-Alpes, an area historically known as the Baronnies, soon to become a Parc Naturel Régional like the Luberon.

Since years the Drôme Provençale is is a favorite vacation destination for many French and continental European visitors. This is a Provence of green rolling hills, endless vineyards, small villages and lots of open spaces. Great for biking small country roads or hiking in the mountains.

We include in this accommodation list an exclave of the Provence, the Enclave des Papes, a historical oddity dating back to 1318, consisting of the town of Valreas and 3 villages. An exclave of the Provence, an enclave in the Drôme Provençale.

Gay/Lesbian friendly? Generally not an issue in liberal France.

Handicapped Access: A real problem with old buildings, make detailed inquiries.

Half-board required? Some hotels and B&B's make this mandatory during the high season.

Bed sizes, nearly all hotels and B&Bs listed here have queen size beds (160cm width) nowadays, instead of the 140 cm width French version. But ask anyway if it is an issue for you.

Insect screens on bedroom and bathroom windows? The Provence has few mosquitoes, except in the Camargue and some areas on the Côte Varois during summer.

Swimming pool? A great idea during summer time, it can be really hot.

Airconditioning? A great idea in July/August if you stay in densely populated places like Aix en Provence, Avignon, Arles, Apt or Orange. Not necessary if you stay in the countryside.
